La Maison Rose – Our haven of peace in the heart of the Cyclades
Discover the island of Syros while staying at our house in Ermoupoli, in the heart of the Cyclades.
It boasts all modern comforts and also offers lovely spaces to relax, including a large terrace with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, the port of Syros and the islands of Naxos and Mykonos. Ermoupolis is sure to charm you with its cultural events (its theatre, cinemas and festivals) as well as its neoclassical houses and maze of narrow streets.
Close to all amenities, this is a charming and cosy house (located a 5-minute walk from the central square, the famous Miaouli Square, where you’ll find numerous shops, tavernas and bars, forming the lively heart of the island); furthermore, its elevated position and panoramic views are the highlights of this house, set in a well-preserved, residential neighbourhood offering absolute tranquillity.
It comprises:
A large living area opening onto a balcony facing the sea, with an open-plan, fully equipped kitchen. An adjoining courtyard allows you to enjoy breakfast in complete peace and quiet.
Two bedrooms, each with a queen size bed and an en-suite bathroom – one with a bath, the other with a shower. Both have their own toilet.
Upstairs, a room known as the ‘retiré’, accessible via an external staircase and opening onto the large terrace, can accommodate two further guests on a sofa bed; this room, highly sought-after for its privacy and the view it offers, has a toilet and a kitchenette.
The terrace, designed to make the most of the view over the harbour and Agios Nikolaos Church, is the ideal spot for an aperitif or evening gatherings in a magical setting.

About the neighborhood
Syros is an unusual island in the Cyclades. Although it is the administrative capital, it does not possess the characteristics that an uninformed visitor might expect.
Here, there are no white houses with blue shutters, nor many villages tucked away in the mountains, but rather a town, Ermoupoli, characterised by a uniform, neoclassical architectural style, as it was built rapidly in the 19th century; a shipyard also dating from the 19th century, which, despite many ups and downs, is still in operation.
Thanks to these activities, the island is less dependent on tourism than its neighbouring islands, and in the town, shops, bars and tavernas are open all year round. Even in winter, everything is open, which is not the case on most of the other islands.
Ermoupoli and its inhabitants have always prided themselves on their cultural richness. This is still evident in its seafront houses, built by shipowners and richly decorated inside; in its marble-paved streets and Miaouli Square; and in its imposing town hall.
It continues to demonstrate its cultural commitment by maintaining a vibrant festival scene that extends well beyond the summer, as well as offering a programme of theatre and cinema events throughout the year.
That is why a holiday in Syros can be a mix of beaches (with fine sand) and cultural visits.
Some points of interest:
- The town hall,
- The Apollo Theatre, reportedly inspired by La Scala in Milan (https://apollontheater.gr/)
- The cinema (open-air in summer): American, French, Greek and other films shown in the original language with Greek subtitles. A great way to improve your English in a unique atmosphere.
- The Museum of Industry, where you’ll learn that electric cars were once manufactured in Ermoupoli!
- The churches, of course:
o Agios Nikolaos (St Nicholas), a must-see
o Anastasi (the Resurrection), up the stairs to the right of the house
o Dormitio, near the Casino
o Agios Giorgos (St George) Catholic Cathedral in Ano Syros
o And others…
- Walks around town, for example in the Vaporia neighbourhood, behind St Nicholas’s Church. There are some lovely walks to enjoy on the island, especially in the largely undeveloped north
Of course, a visit to Ano Syros is a must – a small village with lots of narrow streets. You can get there on foot (a 15–20-minute walk from the house via the steps), by bus or by taxi.
